PART TWO
JOY
THIRTY-FOUR
The events of the last few days have thrown us all into turmoil. Firstly, news leaked out that someone had been arrested for Joyâs murder. I was ecstatic. The police would never chase after me if they locked someone else up.
My head spun a little as I processed the news. An odd mixture of relief, indignation and anger, all churned unpleasantly together and pulsing through my body like a virulent poison. The feeling has not abated.
Yesterday the papers, the forums, social media announced that Joy Maddison had been found safe and well after five years. Speculation was rife but most news channels were leading with the story that Joy had been abducted and kept prisoner all this time. She had somehow managed to escape her captor and take herself to the police station.
And this was the kicker: she had been in Brighton all along. Net curtains are fluttering in the suburbs, shutters are banging in Dyke Road, and the criminal underworld is pretty damn impressed. Who knows what goes on behind closed doors? And who would have guessed Darling Joy was being held in a basement near you?
Iâve joined in the general shock, the emotional outpouring. We are once again divided, with some of us already leaving gifts and welcome home bouquets at Joyâs family home. Others are joining in with the conspiracy theory that Joy planned this all along. A bit harsh, I feel, given what she has been through. A few blurred photos have emerged, taken with lenses pushed up against tinted car windows.
A few drone shots showing the top of Joyâs head, hidden by a hood. It could have been anyone. They are going to have to try harder than that to catch sight of her. And when they do, what will they say? No longer a beautiful princess, but the ugly sister.
Iâm shocked, disappointed she is back, and also interested. How much will she remember? Has she learnt her lesson? Understood at last about the natural order of things? About the role she needs to play in society as a whole?
I do need to keep a watch on her, which will be hard, because sheâs bound to have a massive security presence, and that will be just to protect her from the press, not her fans.
Does she know what I did? Has she told the police? Iâm guessing not, because nothing has happened in terms of announcing suspects. So many unanswered questions as I pace the room, continually scrolling through social media to find the answers. DI Merry is smart, and if anyone can restore Joyâs memory she can. She obviously knows nothing of the natural order of men and women, but at least she doesnât flaunt herself to millions.
I pull up an older photo of Joy, posing in a bikini for a style shoot. There are other types of women more suited to this kind of job. But how far has this broken woman come from the old Joy Maddison, and can she ever
